Independent case study: peer assessment

2. Skyfall

7.

  • The film was produced by Metro-Goldwin-Mayer and EON Productions. Metro-Goldwin-Mayer has produced all 24 Bond films
  • Sony pictures was responsible of the distribution of the film in the uk
  • Sony pictures have distributed the last few James bond films starting from Quantum of solace
  • The budget for skyfall was £150-200 Million
  • The success of skyfall bought around £1 Billion in profits. Some of the success was due to its rigorous promotion and the fact is the 50th anniversary of the film
  • Skyfall earned in £600 Million in the UK
  • Skyfall made £300 million in the US
  • Skyfall received a 12A rating. In my perspective, 12A was a sutible rating as it is 007 is a classic brand which is likely to be synonymous with people of most ages. Also despite the violence in the film. It contains very little bad language as well as sexual references
8.

  • The main representations of the places and groups shown in skyfall are that the places tend to be exotic and vibrant but the people that inhabit them are wild and dangerous
  • The 'Britishness' Shown in Skyfall is the locations used in the UK that tend to be either Central London or the countryside. The strong british accents used by actors also suggest this. The cars  that are usually shown are british brands such as Aston martin, Jaguar and Bentley
  • The main Ideology shown In skyfall is the idea of british pride as well as the good side (which tends to be the British vs the enemy (which tends to be anyone foreign)

9.

In terms of comparison between the studied films ; Skyfall, Ill Manors and A field in England, Each film are similar but very different. For instance Skyfall was a high budget blockbuster film that flexed there financial muscles to use tons of promotion  as well as highly increase the production value of the film. Ill Manors went for the approach of being funded by small production companies to make a urban drama that conflicts with was people's steroetypes of a certain group of people. Despite Ill Manors minuscule budget, it did what it can by using unconventional ways to promote its production. However, despite  A field in England's larger yet small budget of £300 thousand, they decided to go with the unvonventional way of distrubution releasing its film in cinema's, free to air TV, VOD and a DVD release.

Planning for Section B Exam Question

Ill Manors
Tag London Campaign with the usage of Twitter it appeals to their target audience of young people (18 - 25). This would give free publicity for Ill Manors
Jonathan Ross Show -  promotes himself and both Jonathan and Plan B mention Ill Manors, would lead to greater awareness of the movie (shows how Plan B was a man who struggled and now is successful people that don;'t know him would be impressed on how humble he is and might watch the film)
Music Video -  talks about politics which is unconventional for a music video and is linked to the London riots and how the ignorance of the younger demographic has lead to this.
Print interviews
Men's Health
GQ
Film Poster (With recurring narrative with the council estate houses and the theme of we are a product of our environment.)
A Field in England
Was released on multiple platforms immediately as the film was produced. This is creative because it leads to anyone being able to watch the film on any platform
However it would lead to a decline in sales due to people being able to watch the film for free on TV in comparison to Arthouse theatres and paying for it online.
PaddingtonThey heavily advertise the film as a Christmas season film that you go out and watch with the family
Advertised on a range of channels like ITV and BBC to Disney Channel and Nickelodeon
Film was rated PG (film contained rude language / mild action) however it was advertised as a family picture so children would be going to watch the film with an adult.
Hugh Bonneville is also the main character in this film which would attract fans of Downton Abbey because he's also the main character in that TV show as well this also applies for Peter Capaldi who is The Doctor in the TV Sci-Fi Show Doctor Who.
Social Media (Film Character instead of a movie/film instead) Also released clips of the film on does social media platforms as well.
Also had a range of different posters that contain a range of different British monuments / stereotypes for example a red telephone box, underground and Big Ben.

Representation - Channel 4

Young People in this story are represented as victims, helpless and in need of guidance and support from older people. This is shown in this report by using key sentences like "enquired for sex within 4 minutes" "Every time we signed up for Bebbo 50 times and we were asked for sex every time." This means that Channel 4 are trying to represent young people with a need of guidance because they could be using these sites right now.

However in this news story they didn't have one interview or opinion from a young person or someone who is using the site itself. This links with Dyer's media theory on how the middle aged white males have all of the power when presenting this story because Jon Snow is reporting this story and the interview of the expert is also a middle aged white male and the young people don't have one opinion or segment in this story which is all about them.

And this story further added to the stereotypes of young people not being able to look after themselves when they are using the internet because they not mention in this story how young people might not be interested with pedophiles asking them for sex on Bebbo they just assume that every person that uses the Bebbo site is iver a pedophille or a inasent young person who is being manipulated by the pedophilles.

Ill Manors - Print platform initial tasks

Men's Health Interview

The demographic is ABC1 because the audience profile states that 68.4 of people that buy Men's Health are in the ABC1 demographic. I also believe that the psycho graphic is aspirer because people that read Men's Health want to aspire to become big and strong.

The article partly offers Diversion because people will buy the magazine and see the men in the magazines and receive the female gaze from females and men would aspirer to become big and strong. This also links with personal identification because people will want to aspirer to become big and strong.

Men's Health Magazine does have a comment sections so that people can leave their opinion on their website they also have a Facebook, Google+ page and a Twitter Page so that more people can leave comments and feedback for the magazine however they don't have a comment section for the print magazine itself.

They offered a range of different types of questions so that people who are fans of Ben Drew are interested in the article and also people that are not interested in Ben Drew would learn more about him and want he does and his future projects. Also they kept the interview short because some people are not interested in reading a lot of content they would only like the bare minimum.

MEST1 Section B: Independent case study

The Basics

1) What is the name of the film, the director and notable stars?

Paddington, Paul King,
Michael Gambon and Hugh Bonneville
2) When was it released?

2014
3) What genre is the film? What are the generic conventions that tell you the film belongs to this genre?

Comedy Adventure
4) What was the critical reception? What is the film rated on IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes?

Proves that great children's films don't need to be childish, you will want to cuddle 'Paddington' all the way home.

I loved it. It didn't matter to me that myself and my husband were watching it without the cover of escorting children, family movies are probably one of the most satisfying things out there to watch when done as well as this one was.

Broadcast

1) Write a close-textual analysis of the trailer using the MIGRAIN key concepts of Media Studies.

They would use slow paced editing and would let the scene develop so that the audience and see what is going on this is important because this is a comedy so they need to slow down the pace of the trailer so that the comedy from each scene is understood and generates interest for the film. Also because it's a kids movie it's automatically targeted for younger audiences this is evident due to hiring the actor Peter Capaldi who is now the Doctor in the famous TV show Doctor Who.

2) Find examples of television promotion on YouTube (adverts, chat shows, ‘red carpet’ interviews etc.) and post them to your blog along with an explanation of how these promote the film.

3) Does the broadcast promotion use stars to create interest in the film?

Yes because they casted Hugh Bonneville from Downton Abbey which immediately sparked interest from adults which was also lead to greater interest from older viewers who have to bring their kids to see the movie itself also as a mentioned before they have recruited Peter Capaldi as part of the cast who is now the Doctor in the TV show Doctor Who

Print

1) Read at least THREE reviews of the film and provide a quote from each one.

Paddington is absolutely, positively delightful. (New York Magazine/Vulture)

This is not only a dandy, playful movie about a talking bear, but one that gives pause for thought, too. (Globe and Mail)

For parents looking for a film that'll please them and their kids in equal measure, Paddington is -- as Goldilocks would say in that other bear story -- just right. (Associated Press)

2) Find examples of print promotion (e.g. film poster, billboard adverts etc.) on Google images and post them to your blog along with an explanation of how these promote the film.

In this poster it promotes English culture with the red telephone box and Christmas as well with Paddington Bear being put inside a Santa bag so the film is promoting Christmas and hoping people come and see Paddington on Christmas day.

This is a poster that I found on the underground which is funny because people that are waiting for the trains will see this movie poster and how it's almost a mirror image except including Paddington Bear in the picture as well which as a result will make the advert more interesting and as a result more memorable and increases the chances of more viewers for the movie.

This poster is connected with the trailer when Paddington Bear floods the bathroom and lands in the bath sink it promotes the trailer because people would like to see the scene in full after seeing the poster and as a result more and more people would watch the film as well because of the interest that the poster generated.

Paddington used social media differently in comparison to other films instead of promoting the film on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram they promoted Paddington Bear the character instead on the Facebook Page they list it as a film character instead of a movie/film this is the same on Twitter and Instagram as well this works very well because they create a likeable character with the social media platforms by doing this people will be more interested in watching the film and on Instagram they made the profile for Paddington Bear months in advance before the film even came out.

I believe that this film doesn't have a set demographic or psychographic because they use humour that isn't specific for any demographic I film uses a character that connects to people of all ages because it's been around for years and now the movie has come out as a result anyone from any demographic or psychographic can come and watch a character that means a lot to them on the big screen.

This film uses Personal Relationships as a way to promote itself because Paddington the character has been around for over 67 years and has had a series of book in the late 1950's to the late 1970's so millions of people would have grown up reading the Paddington Bear Book Series so they would automatically be interested in the Paddington Movie because they consistently read about the character in their childhood. Also the film was promoted a lot with British Tourist Attractions / British Stereotypes for example the Red Telephone Box, a British Black Cab and Underground Stations they used a lot of does British Stereotypes to paint a picture for what type of film it's going to be.

Paddington was produced by the same Film Studio that is more famous for producing the Harry Potter Franchise Heyday Films and StudioCanel would have the third largest film library in the world. StudioCanal also distributed the film as well in the UK.

This film is very different in comparison to the Harry Potter franchise because the Harry Potter franchise had a specify niece target audience (people who love the book series) to tailor the film towards in comparison to Paddington which doesn't have a specific target audience the only similarity is that both franchises are both based beloved on book characters

The budget for this film was 27.5 million pounds and they made 253 million dollars in the box office which is 173 million pounds which made this film a massive success considering it made a profit of £145,500,000 I believe this film was so successful was due to the time it was released it was released near Christmas season and people are wanting to watch a film as a family and Paddington was a film that older people would connect to due to it famous book series and younger audiences would like the cool animation and the bear itself.

This film was more successful in the UK in comparison to the worldwide audience because more people in the UK would have Personal Relationships with Paddington Bear in comparison to countries like China, USA and India.

Paddington was rated PG because it contain rude humour at times in the film and mild action but it doesn't matter because it's suppose to be a family film so children and parents would go together and see the film that why it doesn't effect the target audience.

This film represents the general British public as caring people with set morals on helping others in need this is showcased in the beginning of the trailer when Miss Brown interacts with Paddington on where is he going to sleep during the night. However some groups are unfocused when representing them for example when representing old people they had Peter Capaldi play Mr Curry who is a bitter old man who has a hatred for everything in comparison to Ms Bird who is played by Juile Walters who is fun and energetic and loves everyone.

This film is all about the British Culture even when they are advertising the film itself they used British monuments like Buckingham Place, Underground Stations and Big Ben to promote the films Britishness the name of the bear is named after a tube station is film is completely British.

This film is representing two completely different cultures Ill Manors is trying to represent teenagers and the gang culture of today and how people enter it and never come out of it beneficial in comparison to Paddington which is focused on representing today's British culture and how amazing London is.

I believe that this film is all about advertising how great the British Culture is and how amazing this country is because they don't stop referencing / showcasing British monuments and also I believe that this film advertises the idea of being a little crazy because in today's age of getting a job and doom and gloom as a result less and less people are being imaginative and having fun which is what this film is all about.

Learner Response

Question 1

Releasing the behind the scenes footage of the process allows views to see what it takes to get one scene in the best quality possible and how far they would go to get that one shot as a result this generates a positive brand image for the BBC because they are showcasing how dedicated they are to providing the best quality footage possible and what they would do to get it.

Question 2

The camera crew showcase a range of different shots in different environments for example one shot was filmed under water with the cameraman diving so that they can film the penguins in their natural environment under water and see the movement they display as well and when shot out of the water and start belly flopping they use sound fx to boost the effect of the bely flop itself.

Question 3

They have developed a personal relationship with the viewer by allowing the camera crew to be themselves and by doing this it allows more humour to be added into the film for example: "See you on the over side" and "We are being taken over by penguins"  This shows that the camera crew are friendly and are humorous and it helps develop a personal relationship with the camera crew and the audience

Question 4

The film entertains from the humour generated from the camera crew and the narrator himself when he directly addressed the film to use "I think it worked" it informs from showcasing the process of making this film and what they are doing to get certain shots done and it educates by showing the beauty of these animals in their natural environments under the sea and sliding on the icy floor.

A Field In England

It’s all about how films are being distributed from the Hollywood Industry in comparison to the smaller distribution companies like Film 4.0, They discuss the idea of how dominant Hollywood are in the movie industry and how they have an monopoly in the movie industry even if they don’t make more film than the rest of the movie industry with over 500 more films made that weren’t from the big 6 (Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros, Universal, Disney and Paramount). Also how the distribution is changing so that multimedia channels are now the way forward in advertising.

A Field in England was the first film in the UK to launch simultaneously across all platforms on VOD (4OD and iTunes), free broadcast TV (Film4), DVD, Blu-Ray and cinema (17 Picturehouse venues).

By releasing the film on all available platforms as a result consumers will be able to see this film anyway possible they can go to a arthouse theatre they could watch it online with iTunes and 4OD and they are offering it for free on Film 4 so consumers will always have the chance to watch the film.

Because as a result it doesn't become a priority to go to the movie theatre and watch the film as quickly as possible because you can just buy the DVD for the same price or get it on iTunes instead and as a result you don't even have to leave the house to watch it or you can go on Film 4 and watch it for free instead so by releasing the film on all the platforms straight away equals to a lose in revenue for all of the platforms your offering it to.It one of the main reasons why the movie only got 64

I believe that the target audience for this would be between 25 and 35 because the film would be for more of an mature audience and the majority of the younger demographic wouldn't be going to art house theatres to watch this movie they would be focused on the mainstream movies like The Avengers or 50 Shades of Grey. Reformers in the B, C1 because this film will require a more mature audience to enjoy the film fully.

I believe that putting a film on all platforms immeditatly will not continue because it damages sales because no goes to the cinema to watch the film or even pay to rent it on iTunes or even stream it off Netflix they will just watch it for free on TV instead which leads to the film making as little money as possible due to everyone not paying to see the film itself.

Ill Manors - Website

They promote the movie by having the Blu-Ray release in bold so that the moment anyone goes on the website they will see that movie is on Blu-Ray also on the side bar their is a link on the website for anyone who wants to buy the DVD which the link is titled Buy Now which takes you to two websites "Play.com" and "Amazon.co.uk".

I believe that the website is taking inspiration from the Ill Manors movie and tailored the website so that it creates the atmosphere that represented in the movie itself for example they use council houses as the main background for the website which further links with Ben Drew's philosophy of your a product of your environment also how he Ben Drew talks about how council state users in the media are misrepresented in the media that why in his song he jokes when he say "Council state are scum of the earth" and "Council Housed And Violent" that's why council houses are important in the background of the website.

It offers the two social media links with Facebook and Twitter, The Ill Manors Album on iTunes, HMV, Play and Amazon, Videos of the making of Ill Manors and the trailer for the film itself.

The synergy on the website is that it wants to portray the same environment that you see in the film into the website they accomplish this by including scenes that were in the movie and placing them in the website as well so they carry an impact from the film to the website they also they replicated the dark glummy environment they had with the movie in the website by having no bright colours and used graffiti in some areas of the website as hyper links.

They have included links to their Facebook and Twitter profiles on their website.

Draft Cover and Double Page Spread

Ill Manors - SBTV

SB.TV is a multi-faceted company run by a small team of young people who work on web-based viral content at different music-based events. The media platform has its origins and roots in urban music. Most of its content can be seen on its own YouTube channel, which was created on 2 November 2006, or on the official SB.TV website. Much of the content includes unprofessional footage, or "street-shot" freestyle raps and music videos. But what made it successful is that it was all unprofessional which gave younger and unknown talent the opportunity to shine in the music industry. I believe that this channel appeals to 16 - 25 year old because they are showcasing the unknown talent that isn't being advertise in the music industry and less people will be willing to listen to rappers they don't know, the demographic is strugglers in the D,E psycho graphic because students that have more time on their hands would be watching YouTube more and would be interested in what other rappers and what they can do in comparison to the music leaders in the industry.

The audience appeal for the interview is that the atmosphere of it is very casual and how they are conducting it like they are friends in comparison to a normal interview which is very formal it's like they are having a normal convocation instead of a interview which will appeal to a younger target audience which is SB.TV are trying to appeal towards and the humour of the SB.TV crew sneaking into the build is funny and also appeal towards the younger target audience.

Plan B is represented in this interview as a hard working director that passionately cares about his project which is Ill Manors the movie and he mention how he has been working so hard he has slept in his own office were he is editing the movie and hasn't washed for days. The audience connects towards Plan B in this interview because they weren't allowed access to the building and Plan B still agreed to the interview anyway and provided great answers to the questions at hand.

Ill Manors - Jonathan Ross Show

1) What is the history of the Jonathan Ross show? What channels has it appeared on? Why has Jonathan Ross been a controversial media figure in the past?

The Jonathan Ross show originated on BBC 1 with a prime time TV slot as well with top end celebrities trying to promote something, however BBC 1 decided that The Graham Norton Show was going to get a higher priority with better celebrities and a YouTube Channel and a better prime time slot as well so Jonathan Ross decided to move his show to ITV instead of BBC. It's a surprise how the general public has warmed to Jonathan Ross again due to the prick call scandal in 2010 with Russell Brand.

2) Identify the target audience for this interview (demographics/psychographics) and say why.

20 - 30 because it's a general age bracket that are interest in rap and the urban genre and also Plan B want to appeal towards the council state reformers which are normally in that age bracket
Mainstreamers / Reformers because people that generally watch Jonathan Ross show are normally Mainstreamers who have comfortable lifestyle and have time to sit down and watch a show like the Jonathan Ross show however people that heard about Plan B being on the show would also go out of their way to see him on the Jonathan Ross show which links to the C1,C2,D and E because people that are fans of Plan B would be in this Demographic

3) What is the audience appeal for a programme like the Jonathan Ross show?

The audience appeal for a show like the Jonathan Ross show is that they will have celebrities on the show that people generally care about and who have strong followings across the UK, and also people that are fans of Jonathan Ross and like his type of humour that will be a unique selling point for the show which will lead to an increase in the amount of viewers.

4) How is Plan B (the brand) represented in this text?

Plan B once again talks about how the world need to realise the fact that people that are in the council house environment and are not fortunate to have a natural happy family and we have to provide help for does type of people and given them the respect they deserve instead of looking down upon them due to their environment.

Ill Manors - Radio

1) How popular is BBC Radio 1? Find average listening figures for the station. How has the BBC Radio 1 audience declined over recent years? Why might this have happened?

BBC Radio 1 has over 300,000 followers on Google+, 2,031,922 likes on Facebook and over 2,1 million followers on Twitter as well. They average over 11 million listeners a week which is 1.6 million everyday depite this they have lost over 300,000 listeners in the past three months of being on the air. This may have happened due to the competition of BBC Radio 2 which has over 12.5 million listeners per week which is why BBC Radio 2 is declining.

2) Who is the target audience for BBC Radio 1?

An average BBC Radio 1 listener is 32 years old even with recent attempts to spice up the action at BBC Radio 1 it's had the opposite effect on their rating with the recent decline of 300,000  in listeners, and only 45.5% of the listeners of BBC Radio 1 are below the age of 25 years old.

3) How does Plan B promote Ill Manors in this interview?

45.5 percent of people that listen to BBC Radio 1 are below the age of 25 so they might be interested in whatever Plan B is trying to advertise. He mentions the film and tells everyone the release date however he doesn't try to oversell the movie to the audience because if you try to sell someone a product to hard sometimes they will loss interest in the product because of it and also people would be watching the film because Plan B is directing so by doing this people that are interested in Plan B will be interested in the movie.

4) What representation of Plan B can we find in this interview?

He is represented as a person who generally cares about the youth demographic more than any politician would  which is a key point because the problem with modern day society is that too many people are concerned with the big problem people forget about the day-to-day problems and the council state parents and students and how they are represented so Plan B wants to proved opportunities for them so they can be successful in their lifetime.

Ill Manors - Music Video

How is it typical of a music video

When Plan B himself is taking part in the music video in the parking lot and the rooftop on the council house, they also contain scenes when Plan B is directly addressing the audience by lip syncing the song which is a common thing for music videos however between some of the scenes in the music video it contains animated scenes of Plan B mocking British Politicians like David Cameron and Nick Clegg.

How does it represent the London riots/rioters?

Plan B allows to showcase how some things are ignored in the British media and how some things are ignored due to the representation having to change other peoples dominate opinion of a character for example in one of the scene you see a policemen attack a protester for no reason and that was completely ignored by the British media because they were focusing on the protesters disturbing modern day society.

What audience pleasures does it offer?

I'm not sure due to this type of music not appealing to me however I believe that it would appeal to a younger demographic in comparison to a older demographic because Plan B himself wants to target younger audiences he mentions that in his Tedx Lecture also it contains a lot of model day swearing and contains a lot of urban culture in the music video itself for example Blackberry phones, jogging suits and stealing products like TV's and trainers.

How does the music video help to promote the film?

It contains characters in the movie in the music video itself and the and song and the movie share the same title so people that like the music video may want to see the movie as well because it's producted by Plan B as well and might appeal towards them.

Making Of Ill Manors from the DVD extras

What does this tell us about Plan B's intentions in making the film?

This shows that Ben Drew wanted to make a film about the other side of London in comparison to the business side which is all about top end schools and hotels and being one of the best cities in the world. But in actually London is a mixture of that and people who are less fortune to be born with parents that don't care about them. Ben Drew's intention is to make a film about the real problems that are around in London that need to be address.

What do we learn about the production process for Ill Manors?

We learn that Ben Drew personally works on the post production work of Ill Manors himself because he is highly motivated to make sure that the film is a success and that it provides the message that he wants to send so that the message gets lost in context of the film. Also we find out how motivated Ben Drew is because he stated multiple times that he has slept in his office where he has been editing the film as well.

What can you tell about the possible target audience from this short documentary?

SBTV are a YouTube Channel and they have a massive audience with over 500,000 subscribers and that's just only the music channel and their audience is dominated by the teenagers and younger adults and Plan B's rap music is focused on teenagers which he mentions in his Tedx Lecture and how he wants to be a father figure to the misguided teenagers to Fans of Plan B who are teenagers and the SBTV Audience are teenagers and younger adults so it would be those demographics that would be interested in the mini documentary also people that generally care about young people and their issue in today's society and how they are represented in the media would also be interested in the mini documentary because he's someone who has lived in the society that he is trying to represent and if he portrays it correctly more and more people will be aware of the problems that young people are facing that are not fortunate of having a happy family background.

Does the film successfully do what director Ben Drew (Plan B) set out to achieve? Explain your answer with reference to both the film and the making of documentary.

Ben Drew is represented in the mini documentary as someone who isn't aware of all of the media terms about how to direct probably in comparison to a trained  director which was one of his main problems in making the film in the first place however Ben Drew directing the film is a unique selling point because at the time the Ill Manors soundtrack came out and after that everyone wanted to fund Ill Manors the movie but they were too late and they were already in production.

Ill Manors e-media: Tag London campaign

Ill Manors Tag Campaign is about the idea of getting anyone voice across and showcasing what the British public has to really way about what we actually think about this country right now. They used twitter because it's one of the most popular social networking sites around and it's dominated by the younger adults and teenagers who are the target audience for the movie and are given the least amount of power in context to the rest of Britain so by showcasing their tweets it shows what the younger demographic what they really think about how this country is run.

When they send their tweets about the tag London campaign they also include #illManors with the tweet as well so when they sending their opinion about how Britain is run at the same time they are promoting the film as well because every tweet contain #illManors which sparked this campaign in the first place. And people that care about the issues behind the scenes of London that might want to see Ben Drew's ill Manors to see if it represents the issues that no one talks about.

The difference between the Ill Manors Tag Campaign and other media texts is that it's entirely based on what the people care about and their issues with today's society and how the media and society consistently ignore their problems and the real issues of the working class people and students. There is no possibility of anything that could manipulated by the media.

Tag London campaign links with Roland Barthes theory on the enigma code because the campaign should hold interest from the general public specially the younger target audience that the movie is trying to appeal towards.

Because user-created campaigns are more focused on what the general public wants to see instead of a normal traditional media campaign which is more risky because they are not sure about what their target audience truly want to see in their movie. By having a user generated campaign the majority of the advertising is through word of mouth or through social media like Facebook and Twitter as a result total cost on advertising will be reduced.

Ill Manors: institution research

1. Subject

Choose an intense subject that should be able to create a larger perspective in your film on a wide canvass. In other words, avoid any subject that deals with family affairs which begin and end in a room. Also avoid comedy films in the beginning because moviegoers get entertained only by established comedians. It will be almost impossible to create comedy sequences with new faces.

2. Story

Story is the most important component of a film. Your story should be complete in all respects to engage an audience as large as possible. That means, avoid any local, niche subjects. Plus, each and every word of your story should be documented on paper before you decide to take it to production. Never discuss the story in a living room or a coffee house to make a film on it. It will simply flop.

3. Screenplay

A professionally developed screenplay will help you save enormous production costs and achieve content quality for your films. Circulate the screenplay among the actors beforehand so that they could come prepared on the set instead of doing an ad hoc work.

4. Paper Trailer

This is a new concept that I am suggesting. Instead of creating promo films or teaser trailers for your film, you should create about 10 minutes of your film demonstrating different sequences in the form of illustrations – like a comic book. This exercise will be quite economical and help you create initial buzz about your film and excite the potential investors. The paper trailer will become a part of your marketing kit.

5. Cast & Crew

You should preferably select only those people for your project who are convinced with your project plan and ready to work on pro bono basis – without taking immediate money. You can, however, fix their sweat equity based on their expertise and role in the project. If your intake and profit distribution model is good, it should not be very difficult to get young and aspiring people who will work without any regular compensation.

6. Marketing

Professional marketing of your project is inevitable especially when you are operating in a cutthroat marketplace of films. Your complete marketing will depend on your marketing content and communications. Don’t deliver even a single word about your project if it’s not part of your planned marketing literature. Position yourself as a filmmaking organization instead of a one-off indie filmmaker.

7. Web Marketing

Ideally, you should have multimedia marketing content for your films. However, to conserve costs, you can begin with just a professional website (using the latest web technology) replete with text and images. But for heaven’s sake never launch your film project if its website on an exclusive domain is not ready. And make sure that the website is regularly updated with fresh content. Marketing is only about content.

8. Social Media Marketing

Most indie filmmakers believe that social media is a kind of ultimate tool to promote their films. They don’t understand even a bit of social media business and keep sending requests to others for joining their social media pages. They don’t understand that social media is not about the number of Facebook fans or Twitter followers.
Rather, social media promotion is totally based on your marketing messaging skills and consumer engagement. If you are interested in just increasing the number of your Facebook likes of Twitter followers, you can buy them cheaply from the web. And don’t even mention about your social media pages if they have just a few hundred or a few thousand fans and followers. This will create a bad impression about you and your film.

9. Funds

Most indie filmmakers think that raising funds for their films is the most difficult part of the project. But it’s not. The trouble with them is they never operate in a professional manner; so there would always be a problem of funds. If you have a team with diverse skills, it should be much easier to raise funds.

10. Blueprint

Covering each and every aspect of your project on paper, you should make an end-to-end blueprint with responsibilities defined for each team member. If your project is running smoothly on the drawing board, there is a greater likelihood it will run successfully in the field too.

Ill Manors: Funding and production budget

Ill Manors received a budget of £100,000 and it was funding by the Film London Microwave Scheme. In comparison towards big Hollywood films Ill Manors had less money to advertise itself and they used unknown actors to portray the film instead of A List Actors like Johnny Depp for example.

Film London and Microwave Film

Film London is the capital's film and media agency - sustaining, promoting and developing London as a major international film-making and film cultural capital. This includes all the screen industries based in London - film, television, video, commercials and new interactive media.

Microwave is a department towards Film London.  Its a film making program to help new director to reach their full potential as a director they over look scripts and also fund movies as well and get them into movie theatres.

Ill Manors
Shifty
Borrowed Time

Ill Manors and Shifty are very similar due to both films being influenced by the microwave film production, both star the main lead with the same actor with Riz Ahmed also both films revolve around the drug, urban environment and both films recieved many awards for its in different film festivals and both were nominated by the BFI for best achievement in production, however Ill Manors is different because the focus of the film changes throughout the film with many different characters will get screen time.

Distributor: Revolver Entertainment

Revolver Entertainment was created in 1997

Anuvahood is a light hearted comedy which is the complete opposite in comparison to Ill Manors when Ill Manors uses rap songs and dark vibe to create it's environment of gaag culture and violance with Anuvahood they use current light heart pop music to create a funny environment instead

They wanted to create a serious vibe around the film so they can recreate the atmosphere that this type of area creates when they are in it. The colours that all the characters wear are black or very dark colours

The trailer for The Imposter is effective because they combined real life footage, interviews and footage they recorded themselves to create a tense and unsettling atmosphere that the director wants to get for the audience

And all three trailers are successful in sparking interest in their selected drama due to creating an atmosphere that sparks an interest towards the general audience.

They went out of business in April 2013

Film Distribution is changing due to new technology due to social media now becoming a essential part of modern day society. Films with small budgets will need to advertise their film will less money in comparison to the big budget Hollywood films of today so they do this by advertise via social media for example setting up a facebook page or a twitter profile or a instagram page and they will do give-aways on does social media platforms however they will tell the people to like and share the give-away to other people which will also get people excited about the film and people that aren't aware of the films release will become aware of the film,

Gunslinger

Anuvahood
SKET
Ill Manors

Shank is another urban British gangster film but the plot is completely different in comparison Ill Manors is all about how thing could go out of hand very quickly and how a community crosses roads in the council state environment however Shank is a simple plot of revenge and the transformation of a normal person to a gangster.

Another film that is based on the urban UK drama is the film Offender which as about a guy called Tommy who was a normal hard working man and snaps and gets revenge on group of gangsters who attacked his girlfriend.

I believe that Gunslinger make so many films in this genre of film because they have a ton of experience in making this type of film and they are easy to make a profit on because they have small budgets to begin with in comparison to a Hollywood Film which have budgets over 300 million.

The social realism genre is all about putting ourselves into the characters we see on the screen and they present issues that normal people experience it's similar to a soap drama like EastEnders for example because it's all about showcasing the real day to day issues that a normal person has, they will normally have début actors or non-actors due to the film needing people that can probably represent the environment that they are in and they will use people who live or have experience that environment before, this is how Gunslinger used this type of film making in the Offenders they used ex-prison mates in the prison scenes to create the environment.

People like urban dramas because it's completely different in comparison to other genres they focus on more realistic events and storylines in comparison to the fantasy Hollywood franchises like The Avengers. Also urban drama's normally romantic the guns, the drugs and the women and people are interested in that type of environment.

Certification

Two examiners watch the film looking for general context of what the story is about and appropriate it is for what age group, language used in the movie itself because say swearing will make the film at least a 12 rating and any drugs referencing in the film or sex scenes which strongly effect what rating the film gets.

What a 18 rated film contains can contain no limit on strong language and very strong language, violence, sexual activity, strong horror and gore, real sex and discriminatory language and behaviour in comparison to 15 rated movies which doesn't allow very strong language like (f*****) and doesn't allow horror and gore in 15 rated movies.
The Disadvantages of having an 18 rated movie this that your excluding the general public to see your film which will always effect a films success, also there are going to be people that don't like 18 rated movies because of the amount of swearing and violence contain in them however if your making a horror film their are no limits to what you can do in does types of films and also it allows for more freedom for script writers because they can write whatever they want and they will not have to remove it due to certification restrictions.
