1. Subject
Choose
an intense subject that should be able to create a larger perspective in your
film on a wide canvass. In other words, avoid any subject that deals with
family affairs which begin and end in a room. Also avoid comedy films in the
beginning because moviegoers get entertained only by established comedians. It
will be almost impossible to create comedy sequences with new faces.
2. Story
Story is the most
important component of a film. Your story should be complete in all respects to
engage an audience as large as possible. That means, avoid any local, niche
subjects. Plus, each and every word of your story should
be documented on paper before you decide to take it to production.
Never discuss the story in a living room or a coffee house to make a film on
it. It will simply flop.
3. Screenplay
A
professionally developed screenplay will help you save enormous production
costs and achieve content quality for your films. Circulate the screenplay
among the actors beforehand so that they could come prepared on the set instead
of doing an ad hoc work.
4. Paper Trailer
This is
a new concept that I am suggesting. Instead of creating promo films or teaser
trailers for your film, you should create about 10 minutes of your film
demonstrating different sequences in the form of illustrations – like a comic
book. This exercise will be quite economical and help you create initial buzz
about your film and excite the potential investors. The paper trailer will
become a part of your marketing kit.
5. Cast & Crew
You
should preferably select only those people for your project who are convinced
with your project plan and ready to work on pro bono basis – without taking
immediate money. You can, however, fix their sweat equity based on their
expertise and role in the project. If your intake and profit distribution model
is good, it should not be very difficult to get young and aspiring people who
will work without any regular compensation.
6. Marketing
Professional marketing of
your project is inevitable especially when you are operating in a cutthroat
marketplace of films. Your complete marketing will depend on your marketing content and communications. Don’t deliver
even a single word about your project if it’s not part of your planned
marketing literature. Position yourself as a filmmaking organization instead of
a one-off indie filmmaker.
7. Web Marketing
Ideally, you should have multimedia marketing content for your films.
However, to conserve costs, you can begin with just a professional website
(using the latest web technology) replete with text and images. But for
heaven’s sake never launch your film project if its website on an exclusive
domain is not ready. And make sure that the website is regularly updated with
fresh content. Marketing is only about content.
8. Social Media Marketing
Most indie filmmakers
believe that social media is a kind of ultimate tool to promote their films.
They don’t understand even a bit of social media business
and keep sending requests to others for joining their social media pages. They
don’t understand that social media is not about the number of Facebook fans or
Twitter followers.
Rather,
social media promotion is totally based on your marketing messaging skills and
consumer engagement. If you are interested in just increasing the number of
your Facebook likes of Twitter followers, you can buy them cheaply from the
web. And don’t even mention about your social media pages if they have just a
few hundred or a few thousand fans and followers. This will create a bad
impression about you and your film.
9. Funds
Most
indie filmmakers think that raising funds for their films is the most difficult
part of the project. But it’s not. The trouble with them is they never operate
in a professional manner; so there would always be a problem of funds. If you
have a team with diverse skills, it should be much easier to raise funds.
10. Blueprint
Covering
each and every aspect of your project on paper, you should make an end-to-end
blueprint with responsibilities defined for each team member. If your project
is running smoothly on the drawing board, there is a greater likelihood it will
run successfully in the field too.
Ill
Manors: Funding and production budget
Ill Manors received a
budget of £100,000 and it was funding by the Film London Microwave Scheme. In
comparison towards big Hollywood films Ill Manors had less money to advertise
itself and they used unknown actors to portray the film instead of A List
Actors like Johnny Depp for example.
Film
London and Microwave Film
Film London is the
capital's film and media agency - sustaining, promoting and
developing London as a major international film-making
and film cultural capital. This includes all the screen industries
based in London - film, television, video, commercials and new
interactive media.
Microwave is a
department towards Film London. Its a film making program to
help new director to reach their full potential as a director they over
look scripts and also fund movies as well and get them into
movie theatres.
Ill Manors
Shifty
Borrowed Time
Ill Manors and Shifty
are very similar due to both films being influenced by the microwave film
production, both star the main lead with the same actor with Riz Ahmed also
both films revolve around the drug, urban environment and both films recieved
many awards for its in different film festivals and both were nominated by the
BFI for best achievement in production, however Ill Manors is
different because the focus of the film changes throughout the film with many
different characters will get screen time.
Distributor: Revolver
Entertainment
Revolver Entertainment was
created in 1997
Anuvahood is a light
hearted comedy which is the complete opposite in comparison to Ill Manors when
Ill Manors uses rap songs and dark vibe to create it's environment of gaag
culture and violance with Anuvahood they use current light heart pop music to create
a funny environment instead
They wanted to create a
serious vibe around the film so they can recreate the atmosphere that this type
of area creates when they are in it. The colours that all the characters wear
are black or very dark colours
The trailer for The
Imposter is effective because they combined real life footage, interviews and
footage they recorded themselves to create a tense and unsettling atmosphere
that the director wants to get for the audience
And all three trailers are
successful in sparking interest in their selected drama due to creating an
atmosphere that sparks an interest towards the general audience.
They went out of business
in April 2013
Film Distribution is
changing due to new technology due to social media now becoming a essential
part of modern day society. Films with small budgets will need to advertise
their film will less money in comparison to the big budget Hollywood films of
today so they do this by advertise via social media for example setting up a
facebook page or a twitter profile or a instagram page and they will do
give-aways on does social media platforms however they will tell the people to
like and share the give-away to other people which will also get people excited
about the film and people that aren't aware of the films release will become
aware of the film,
Gunslinger

SKET
Ill Manors
Shank is another
urban British gangster film but the plot is completely different in
comparison Ill Manors is all about how thing could go out of hand very quickly
and how a community crosses roads in the council state environment however
Shank is a simple plot of revenge and the transformation of a normal person to
a gangster.
Another film that is
based on the urban UK drama is the film Offender which as about a guy called
Tommy who was a normal hard working man and snaps and gets revenge on group of
gangsters who attacked his girlfriend.
I believe that
Gunslinger make so many films in this genre of film because they have a ton of
experience in making this type of film and they are easy to make a profit on
because they have small budgets to begin with in comparison to a Hollywood Film
which have budgets over 300 million.
The social realism genre
is all about putting ourselves into the characters we see on the screen and
they present issues that normal people experience it's similar to a soap drama
like EastEnders for example because it's all about showcasing the
real day to day issues that a normal person has, they will normally
have début actors or non-actors due to the film needing people that
can probably represent the environment that they are in and they
will use people who live or have experience that environment before, this is
how Gunslinger used this type of film making in the Offenders they used
ex-prison mates in the prison scenes to create the environment.
People like urban dramas
because it's completely different in comparison to other genres they focus on
more realistic events and storylines in comparison to
the fantasy Hollywood franchises like The Avengers. Also urban
drama's normally romantic the guns, the drugs and the women and people are
interested in that type of environment.
Certification
Two examiners watch the
film looking for general context of what the story is about
and appropriate it is for what age group, language used in the movie
itself because say swearing will make the film at least a 12 rating and
any drugs referencing in the film or sex scenes which strongly effect what
rating the film gets.
What a 18 rated film contains can contain no limit on strong
language and very strong language, violence, sexual activity, strong horror and
gore, real sex and discriminatory language and behaviour in
comparison to 15 rated movies which doesn't allow very strong language like
(f*****) and doesn't allow horror and gore in 15 rated movies.
The Disadvantages of having an 18 rated movie this that your excluding the general public to see your film which will always effect a films success, also there are going to be people that don't like 18 rated movies because of the amount of swearing and violence contain in them however if your making a horror film their are no limits to what you can do in does types of films and also it allows for more freedom for script writers because they can write whatever they want and they will not have to remove it due to certification restrictions.
