The film clip that I am going to be analysing is Snatch
which is a film about “Unscrupulous
boxing promoters, violent bookmakers, a Russian gangster, incompetent amateur
robbers, and supposedly Jewish jewellers fight to track down a priceless stolen
diamond.” *imdb*. The clip that I’m using is the last fight scene and in
this clip the director uses a combination of different types of shots to add to
the drama of this final confrontation.
Firstly, they use over
the shoulder shot to show the best angle to seeing the fight. Also by using a
lot of over the shoulder shots as a result it portrays the point-of-view from
the from one of the fighters perspectives. However the director also used a lot
of medium close shots as well this also links with the use of the over the
shoulder shots because by only showing the torso upwards in boxing that is the
most important area the torso, head and arms.
Secondly, the director
used some point-of-view shots basically they will use shots when you only see
what the character is seeing but the director only uses this shots
inconsistently because he wants to create the atmosphere of high intensity and
also being in a closed environment because you see in the area that they are in
that the arena is packed with spectators so they only use the point of view shots
when they want to focus on the damage that is being taken from the fighters. Also
the director filmed certain parts of the fight in a montage format this is
effective because they use it to emphasise the damage taken
Thirdly, the director used and long shot but from multiple
angles in one of my favourite scenes in the movie what’s happening is that one
of the fighters is being knocked out and he’s falling through the air and uses
a long shot to get the full effect of that one punch that set him flying and
the director complements this scene with a match cut it’s my favourite scene in
the clip and the director used a low angle shot to show how the character is
falling to the ground and how the other character is above them.
Finally, I talked about this earlier but the director used a
montage in the clip but they used freeze frames in the clip it show a passing
of time but the director used the freeze frames to show more violent scenes of
the characters punching each other this gives the effect of time pasting and
throughout that time the high intensity atmosphere maintain throughout and also
he used the Dutch tilt as well to maintain the high intensity of a boxing
match.
In conclusion I believe that the director has used a range
of different types of shot in the clip ranging from point of view shots to low
angled shots and even the Dutch Tilt overall this is one of my favourite clips
in the movie because it concludes everything in the film in one scene and how
everything comes down it this one boxing match.
