Preliminary Exercise

The Preliminary Exercise had a lot of faults and should have been produced a lot better in comparison to where we need to be for the final piece of work. The Preliminary Exercise was supposed to help groups develop their ideas and to test to see if the group that you are working in is the group you should be working with for the 2 minute task.

The first problem was the amount of transitions. A transition is supposed to be used to mark when time has passed throughout the story however in the Preliminary Exercise they were used to fill out awkward jump cuts which had the opposite effect on the Preliminary Exercise task so that instead it looked unfocused and unprofessional. Now I know that transitions should only be used to show a passing of time instead of being used in convocations.

Another problem of the Preliminary Exercise was using the same actor twice. Using the same actor is never a good thing. Normally the same actor trick is only used when a character is talking to himself in his mind and is in inner turmoil however it was only used to show two different characters which make it look unprofessional and awkward to watch. In future I now know that we should always have at least two actors at all times.

Another problem of the Preliminary Exercise was amount of extra footage that we had but never used. When recording the Preliminary Exercise we had over 5 minutes of footage and we had to get rid of a lot of content that we liked so that it made the 30 second time frame. As a result we wasted a lot of time recording a lot of content but ended up being deleted. I now know that the importance of recording the right amount of content and not recording access.

Another problem of the Preliminary Exercise was that the group wasn’t fully organised. When having a group task the entire group has to be on the same page. If people are missing during recording as a result we wouldn’t get the best content because not everyone is contributing to the task. For example Lee wasn’t around when we started recording the convocation and as a result we had to use the same actor twice which looked horrible. Now I know that everyone needs to be available when we are recording the actual 2 minute programme.

A good thing that occurred during the Preliminary Exercise was the quality of sound in the Preliminary Exercise. During the Preliminary Exercise the quality in sound is very high and you can hear every word very clearly this means that the audience will not miss hear anything that is being said. This is a very good thing that need to be carried to the 2 minute exercise because if the sound quality is terrible the audience will be unable to hear what is going on and as a result the audience would lose interest and would stop watching.

  1. Mark: 6/10
    Grade: C
WWW: A very solid evaluation - I agree with your assessment and the honest appraisal of the weaknesses in the production. You have learned a lot - this is exactly why we do the preliminary exercise!
EBI: To reach an A or B grade you need to be analysing specific shots in a bit more detail and make sure you're confidently using media language throughout. One other point - recording too much footage is not usually a major issue - it's better to have too much than too little!
    LR: Complete the following tasks:
    1) Using this assessment, your last interim and the film language test, write what grade you are realistically working at in Media currently. Are you happy with this grade?
    2) Choose ONE specific aspect of your evaluation that you will try to improve for the real thing next term. Next, explain HOW will you improve it.
    3) Write a list of ALL Media work you need to do over the next three weeks - for both coursework and exam lessons.

  2. After looking over all of my work I believe that I am working at a C grade level which I am not satisfied with because I want a least a B grade.

I will need to add more Media Language throughout the evaluation so that I can reach the B and A grade levels.

I need to do the status update, Finish off the Institution Research and the pre-production
